Filon Exterior Finish Care
I found that "Crane Composites" is the manufacture of the "Filon" brand smooth exterior walls found on many Jayco model products. I was looking for, and found, what the manufacture states about caring for the Filon surface.
My '05' Eagle front wall (above the LP tanks) seems to be the exterior surface that requires more care than the others, for abvious reasons. I have waxed the surface a number of times over the past few years, but it never seems to bring out the original shine. I have read on other forums what materials many folks use, but I was curious what the manufacture recommends.
Two things that stood out on the manufacture's care process was the use of a "cleaning compound" prior to waxing and using "paste" wax (not liquid). I assume the cleaning compound helps lift up the damage done by the suns UV rays. Crane Composites recommends the following care of the Filon surface:
MAINTAINING FINISH:
1. Wash your RV with liquid detergents.
2. If you prefer to wax the sidwalls, use automotive cleaner or waxes/polishes developed for use on fiberglass boats, showers, and tubs. Follow the directions on the package.
RESTORING GLOSS:
This is the procedure for restoring the gloss and finish to a weathered Filon RV product. It is for hand application only.
Materials Required;
- Mild detergent.
- Soft cotton cloth.
- Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound Heavy Duty Cleaner.
- Turtle Wax Super Hard Shell Car Wax Paste.
- Mechanical buffer (optional).
- Turtle Wax Polishing Compound (for buffer use only).
1. Wash the Filon panel with mild detergent and water.
2. Dry the Filon panel with a clean, soft cotton cloth.
3. Apply Heavy Duty cleaner by following the directions on the container. (If a buffer is availiable, substitute polishing compound for heavy duty cleaner and buff polishing compund "lightly").
4. Wash the Filon panel with water (no detergent) and dry the surface.
5. Apply car wax paste per directions.
When the weather warms up I'm going to give it another try and see how it turns out.

Re: Filon Exterior Finish Care
Great information. What about the graphics? I've read on RV.net that special care should be taken to avoid wax on the graphics as this will accelerate their deterioration. Any insite?

Re: Filon Exterior Finish Care
"Liquid" Turtle wax hasn't been an issue with my decals to-date, but I plan to keep the paste wax and rubbing compound away from them. This will be the first time using rubbing compound and paste wax.
I just had a new Filon entry sidewall (full length) and rear Filon wall installed due to water damage, so they don't need any attention. So the front wall surface is priority, then I will tackle the slide sidewall. I might give it a try next weekend depending on the weather.

Turk,
Good luck on this weekend. I see rain until Sunday then snow with more rain Tuesday through Friday next week. Just hope they are as wrong as usual and you will be okay.

Re: Filon Exterior Finish Care
Was able to tackle some of the clean/wax of my TT today (Friday) taking advantage of the 50ish temps... I only completed the front exterior Filon surface of the TT, which was my main objective anyway, and I was pleased with the results considering I didn't use a power buffer. I was able to restore a fair amount of the "gloss", but feel the use of a buffer may enhance the results.
After rubbing out the Filon, the application of the paste wax seemed to go rather easy since the surface was cleaned. I also kept a couple of damp applicator pads handy to aid in removing the excess rubbing compound, the stuff can be tough to get off with a dry cloth. I did keep the front of my TT out of direct sun light while working on it, which is a must when dealing with the rubbing compound.
Next test is to see how long the surface holds it gloss over the summer.
