Sad Effects of Economy

Post  turbofamily on Sat Feb 28, 2009 8:34 pm

It is sad. Hopefully everyone will be able to get the education they need to get the jobs that are offered here in Indiana. You need to have a degree or trade.

sad but true. I am a HS graduate at least but I think this country puts way too much value into a degree for some jobs. The people I graduated with that went to college are still so immature i don't associate with them yet they will get to "grow up" while having a great paying job. I had someone give me a chance and I work hard because I can and have glowing reviews from my company.

I'm not knocking college or graduates but SOME jobs it shouldn't matter, and the people getting hired are frankly losers compared to a hard worker who couldn't afford or wasn't able to go to college.

case in point: a few years back I got an interview at Enterprise rent a car. the looked at my resume and dismissed me. I had Management experience at a car lot. well a couple of years later I had a horrible experience at the same enterprise that required me to call the same manager who wouldn't interview me. after completing business I thanked him. he asked why and I told him if it wasn't for his short sighted view I may be stuck dealing with these inept employees. he then remembered and asked me what I was doing. When I filled him in that I was given a chance and make more than he does he had that priceless look.

heck this woman should be judged on her work alone at this point not a mistake she made 20 years ago.

Mike, I agree I am HS graduate, have some Jr. Collage, Technical School and lots of seminars and continuing education classes. There are many times I wished I had gone to a 4 year collage but it just did not happen, I have always had plenty of work and some wonderful opportunities over the years. I have been in the industrial automation and manufacturing business for a little over 35 years.
I have met many people with college degrees, very smart people but just do not have any common sense. They are book smart but cannot apply their knowledge it to everyday problems and opportunities.
In today’s economy it has been tough for everyone no matter what their background. I sure hope this economy turns around this year and things get better for everyone.

Mike- I know what your saying, but here in Indiana, especially here in South Bend/ Elkhart area if you don't have some form of degree they're not even letting you in the door any more. When husband was laid off 2 years ago from Fairmont Homes after 11 years, he couldn't get his foot in the door any where, even though he had only worked at 2 companies in 28 years. He was and still is a warehouse manager, with 2 1/2years of college experience. Thank goodness that Fairmonts other company, Gulfstream realized that they needed his kind of experience and hired him, even though they laid him off with everyone else 6 months ago. But as you know from RVNet, he's back at work now!!
It's sad, as a nurse I see how this is effecting my patients and their health care. Most have lost their insurance and don't qualify for any assistance. We were lucky, Gulfstream paid for my husbands and my insurance for the whole 6 months while he was off.
I wish there was something I could do to help these poor people.
